Station manager Randy Yates was in his office working on his computer when the lightning struck. According to Yates, he heard three loud bangs, followed by a partial electrical blackout. The smell of smoke quickly began to fill the office, and when he cracked the attic access stairs, he saw flames in the roof. He called 911 from his cell phone, and decided that it was spreading too fast to attempt to remove any equipment from the control rooms. The Keene Fire Department was on the scene quickly. Their fast response kept the fire from spreading to other buildings and offices in the complex. They were able to extinguish the fire before the building was completely ruined, but smoke and water damage is extensive in the radio station. It is not yet clear how much equipment has been destroyed, but Yates is hopeful that the radio station will be back on the air to some degree over the weekend.
