2006 Contest Healthy Lifestyle Contest 2006At stake were Wewoka Woods T-shirts, Free Weeks of camp and $1000. Cash! This added to the excitement that brought over 75 boys and girls, teachers and parents together at Ketchum Adventist School for the 2006 Healthy Lifestyle Contest. Head teacher Damian Toews along with Donna Doss and Michelle Landelius lead out in organizing volunteers to clean and set up the auditorium. The walls of the auditorium were covered with posters the students had made. Parents and visitors walked around the auditorium viewing the various posters trying to decide which was their top pick. Judges had a difficult time trying to decide the same thing! The topics being represented were as varied as the style of art making up the posters. Lots of glitter, yarn, construction paper, crayons, pencil, poster paint and foam letters were arranged to convey messages of a healthy lifestyle. ![]() The Ketchum Pastor, Jim Landelius, was busy setting up and running the projector system showing the Power Point projects to be judged, as well as the Skit on video. ![]() Sheri Fisher and Annette Park read the winning essays while the audience waited in anticipation to see whom the winning writer would be. Kindergarten students also sent in posters to be judged. Since there is no program yet for Kindergarten entries at the North American Division level, the winning Kindergarten students were presented trophies for their hard work. Following all the smiles and applause during the award presentation, Academy teacher Karen Schaefer started the special afternoon program by inducing our guest from ADRA, Joel Thompkins. Elder Thompkins talked to the audience about what ADRA does and then showed a short movie about the difference ADRA is making in the world. Stations were set up around the auditorium so the students could gain greater insight into the world of ADRA. Al Schaefer helped staff a favorite spot, the feeding station, were all could sample the ADRA biscuits that would be provided in a refugee camp. (Most all who tried the food decided they hoped never to become a refugee!) The bold and brave were able to get their finger pricked so they could have their blood sugar tested. Mrs. Joan Schaefer was on hand to offer a word of comfort and a bandage to all who gave a drop of blood! Donald Upson was on hand with his ABC display to give an opportunity for books, food, games, and music to be bought. Although Elder John Moyer was called to attend to a hospital visit, he was still with us in spirit, and offered a prize to each of the participating students and teachers from the ABC. The buying frenzy hitting the cash register all at once was aptly handled by brother Upson! It was a great school day for students to learn more about healthy living and how they can help impact the world thru ADRA. ![]() A big thanks to all who made this a school day to remember!
